The Housing Advocate at Westchester Disabled on the Move is available on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., to assist disabled consumers who are in need of housing. The Housing Advocate’s role is strictly information and referral. Consumers meet with the Housing Advocate to discuss their housing issues. Based on that discussion, the Housing Advocate provides the consumers with resources to help them go about the task of finding an apartment. Meetings with the Housing Advocate usually last about one hour. The Housing Advocate also helps consumers who are unable to complete housing applications. The Housing Advocate does not visit consumers at home. Occasionally, the Housing Advocate, along with the Case Manager for the Nursing Home Transition and Diversion Waiver Program (NHTD), visit consumers who are in nursing homes in Yonkers.
At 2 p.m. on the second Friday of the month, the Housing Advocate conducts a Housing Workshop in the conference room at WDOMI. Every month, a guest speaker is invited to address consumers about some housing-related issue. A question and answer session follows the guest speaker’s presentation. The Housing Advocate and WDOMI’s Systems Advocate also present a short program for consumers. Refreshments are served at the end of the workshop. The workshop is a great opportunity for consumers to talk to each other, and share concerns.
Occasionally, the Housing Advocate writes a short article for WDOMI’s website. The first topic was Section 8. Upcoming topics include housing discrimination and individuals with criminal backgrounds, and the housing crisis being faced by senior, middle class women. If there is any topic you would like to hear about, please contact WDOMI’s Housing Advocate to make your request.
The Housing Advocate would like to thank all the Human Service and Social Service professionals who make referrals to WDOMI. Your confidence in WDOMI’s Housing Advocate is greatly appreciated.
