Legislator Nancy Barr delivers $64,691 to fund program to keep disabled people living independently
White Plains, NY — Westchester County Legislator Nancy E. Barr (D – Harrison, Rye Brook, Port Chester) has delivered $64,691 in funding to Westchester Disabled on the Move, Inc. to help sustain some of its most critical programs.
Since its founding in 1984, Westchester Disabled on the Move, Inc. (WDOM) has championed inclusivity, accessibility, and equality for people with disabilities in Westchester County. This non-residential agency provides free support and services to people of all ages, helping them live more independent, joyful lives. People with disabilities primarily staff and govern WDOM.
With support from her colleagues on the Board of Legislators, Legislator Barr secured $28,641 for WDOM’s Fair Housing – Accessible & Affordable program. This initiative helps residents with disabilities apply for appropriate, accessible, affordable housing and advocates for them during the admissions process.
The Board also approved $36,050 for WDOM’s My Home Not Nursing Home program, which integrates multiple services supporting independent living. WDOM Service Coordinators work with family members, caregivers, nursing homes, and related organizations to educate them about benefits available to those who want to avoid or leave institutionalization. The program operates on the philosophy that people with disabilities can lead rich, independent lives with proper support.
