What’s New with Medicaid 2024

WDOM is dedicated to assisting Westchester residents in getting and keeping affordable health insurance, such as Medicaid, Essential Plan, and Child Health Plus. We are part of the Keep New York Covered (KNYC) campaign. We educate on the latest changes to affordable health insurance, such as Medicaid. See the article below by Darla Lao Paula on the latest changes.

Medicaid provides health coverage to eligible low-income adults, children, pregnant women, elderly adults, and people with disabilities. In January, the NYS Department of Health made significant updates to the income and resource limits for Medicaid applicants and recipients who are over 65 or have a disability. These changes are crucial for you to understand.

For new community Medicaid applications submitted after January 1, 2024, an individual can keep resources of $31,175 (up from $30,182 in 2023) and an income of $1,732 (up from $1,677 in 2023). Individuals seeking Medicaid in nursing homes are still limited to only $50 a month of income but can keep resources of $31,175 (up from $30,182 in 2023). The income and asset values increase for married couples but depend on whether one or both spouses receive Medicaid benefits and, if so, which type of Medicaid (community and/or nursing home) each spouse receives.

People under 65 and without a disability can get affordable health insurance (e.g., Medicaid or Essential Plan) through the New York State of Health. Eligibility is determined solely by income, and there is no resource limit for people who get their health insurance this way.
