Hugo Rubirosa’s story, which follows his transition from North Carolina, is a gripping account of perseverance, ambition, and resilience. Hugo was drawn to the groundbreaking EKSO exoskeleton suit trials because he saw a new era of freedom and movement in New York City. Hugo, however, suffered a serious setback when his health deteriorated, and it became impossible for him to continue in the program. But his ambition to take advantage of the many options the city offered kept him steadfast in his commitment to establish a life in the busy metropolis.
A severe injury abruptly halted a former wrestling prodigy, Hugo’s promising career during a match in 2012. Now 29, living independently. Hugo exemplifies sheer perseverance while pursuing a degree as an ADA compliance assessor. His initial encounter with the ReWalk Robotics program at the James J. Peters Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center offered him a glimpse into the potential for regaining movement, likening it to wearing an “Iron Man suit.”
Westchester Disabled on the Move (WDOM) played a pivotal role in Hugo’s journey of growth and adaptation, providing not just practical support like housing, but also a sense of community. Hugo envisions himself as an engineer who will merge technology with humanitarian concerns, aiming for more than just professional success. His goal is to return to North Carolina, start a family, and establish a company, a testament to his unyielding spirit and hope, nurtured by the unwavering support of his community and family.
Before moving to New York, Hugo pursued his dreams of independent living even further by researching cutting-edge therapies across the country, from Greenville to the Shepherd Center in Atlanta. The epidemic caused difficulties, but he has regained the use of his arms after surgery and therapy. His mother returned to North Carolina, but her daily calls are a constant source of love and support, reminding him of the family’s journey through hardship, united by love and shared goals.
As an ambassador for the Miracle League, Hugo’s dedication extends far beyond his personal achievements. He is committed to spreading joy and inspiration, serving as a beacon of hope for others. Through his engagements, he demonstrates the transformative power of perseverance and community support. Hugo’s mission is clear, “My duty is to advocate for people like myself, spreading happiness wherever I go.”
